Hello and welcome to the beginning of your child’s education. I want this year to be one filled with many fun and educational learning opportunities. We are off to a great start!

Reading: This week we introduced our rotation of Guided Reading groups and Centers. Students worked in smaller groups with a teacher or on their own on specific lesson or objective in the area of Literacy. At this point, we are focusing on students becoming familiar with our routines and to remain on task.

The Letters we worked on were L and K and students bought in many items that we used during literacy time.
Rhyming- We have been working on words that rhyme. Please work on this skill with your child at home.

Sight words: I, am, like, the (Please practice these at home with your child this week.) Index cards will be sent home next week in a Ziploc bag and will be present on our word wall.

Writing: This week we were introduced to our Writing Journals. Students were able to respond to a story that was read to them. Students were asked to draw about a favorite part of the story or to make a connection to the story with their own experience. Students either wrote their own sentence or dictated one.

Math: This week we worked on the quantities one through ten. We also worked on 2 color patterns with snapping cubes and during calendar time with our apples. I will also send home the Home Math Links on Monday with an introduction letter. These homework links will help you to do activities that will reinforce our learning that occurs at school.

Science: We are still working on Apples/Trees and identified the parts of a tree. Students were also able to make apple prints on apple patterns.

Just a few reminders:

1. Please have your child gather small items that start with the letter M for next week. Please send them in the small brown paper bag.

2. Curriculum Night will be on Wednesday, September 22, 2010 at 6:30 p.m.

3. Please remember that our Green Homework folders go out on Monday and are due on Friday. I will gradually increase homework as time goes on.

4. Snacks for next week: Jerry Q., Jeremie,
Johnson, Torin, Kai and Yiding.

5. Students may also bring in water bottles for snack time and for our much needed water breaks. This eliminates taking time away from our instructional time.

Monday: Gym
Tuesday: Library and Spanish
Wednesday: Computers
Thursday: Music
Friday: Gym and Spanish

I hope to see all of you at our Curriculum Night! Have a wonderful weekend!

Kindest Regards!

Mrs. Piscitelli
