 Wednesday, November 10, 2010

Well we made it through our first 10 weeks of Kindergarten!! Our classroom is truly becoming a wonderful learning community!
Parent-Teacher conference will be on Wednesday, November 17th from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Please sign up for an appointment, on the green bulletin board near the main entrance of the school

Reading: During  our Reading/Literacy block, we focused on making connections to self  with the stories, My Friend and I and Ira Sleeps Over.  We discussed how  to become friends with someone new. Students drew beautiful pictures along with words and sentences of their new friendship.

Also, we read the book Red is a Dragon, by Grace Lin.   Each student then chose a color to write about in their writing notebooks and had to think of four things of that color and then label the items. We had some very creative work!

Letter of the Week: was W  /sound— We focused on singing the W Food song and mentioned, waffles, watermelon and walnuts in the song.  We also made Wacky Waffles on Wednesday…yum! Thank-you for the donations of bananas, strawberries, raisins and whipped cream..  We enjoyed discussing symmetry in regards to the Waffle shape and then had the chance to make a Symmetrical design on our waffles.  Our students really made some silly symmetrical Wacky Waffles!

Math: In math this week we had fun learning about Symmetry.  We used a string and pattern blocks to make some intricate shapes that were symmetrical. I was very impressed with our students’ creativity. We learned about symmetry in nature, architecture, and letters.

Social Studies: We have started our second unit, which is America and learned about the U.S. Flag, American symbols and Washington D.C.  We discussed what voting was and walked through the lower level where some of the voting booths remained from Election Day.
