Winter is a wonderful time to enjoy the crisp, chilly air and the snow, of course! However, this past week we had 10 students that were sick with fever and the stomach flu. Please remember that your child must be fever-free for 24 hours before returning to school. At school, we will continue to sanitize and wash our hands every chance we get

Literacy/Reading: This week we continued, “ The Gingerbread Man” Literacy Unit  and have enjoyed several different versions of the story.  Here is an anchor chart that we made, where we compared Characters, Ending and learned what a Refrain is.

After reading the first story I asked them what the Gingerbread Man could have done differently.  They came up with some really good answers.  Some examples were, “He could have ran around the river,”  “He could have ran back the way he came and went under their legs.”  and “He should have just swam across the river by himself!”   The last answer is the one I always hope for because it leads right into our Science Experiment.  The kids made a hypothesis about what they think would have happened to the Gingerbread Man if he had swam across by himself.  Then, we put a gingerbread boy cookie in a little tub of water to observe and record what happens.  Ask your child to explain what happened to our little gingerbread boy cookie in the tub of water.

Letter of the Week: was I—  We worked on identifying short I sounds in CVC words.  We also measured in inches different classroom items. We sang the “I song” and dance to the Freeze Song, and froze into “icicles”.

Math: The children had the chance to explore 3-D shapes and then had the opportunity to build 3-D shapes. The children had a great time using marshmallows to build these shapes. The children had great discussion on the difference between 2-D and 3-D.

We also took a bite of our gingerbread man cookie and made a graph to show which part we bit first- legs 12, head-5, arms 2.

Art: On December 16th, we will have an Art Gallery walk, craft fair and a Holiday Assembly. Our classroom worked on Oil Pastel Poinsettias with glitter highlights that are on display.  I am so proud of our students who remained very focused and patient during this project. They are simply beautiful works of art!

Recess: Since we had such cold, frigid weather, we did have to stay indoors all this week. For our second recess time, we did utilize the tricycles, gymnastic mats and bouncy balls in the lower level of the building.  We really did enjoy this much needed exercise time.

1. Practice counting coins with pennies and nickels.  We are incorporating this during our calendar time on a daily basis.

2. Practice your 20 “Heart” sight words that are in your red folder. Once your child can read these words, send in a note so that they can read them to me.  Students will then receive the next remaining lists of words throughout the year.

Just a few reminders:

1. Please have your child gather small items that start with the letter R for next week.  Please send them in the small brown paper bag.

2. We will be making Reindeer snacks next week, so if you can donate chex mix, peanuts, raisins,  plain m&m’s or small pretzels, please let me know.
