 Reading: In Journeys, we read several different leveled readers, The Storm, The Desert and Swimmy and focused on Author’s Purpose and Visualization.

 We have been working on CVC words now since about the beginning of November, and by now the students  “should” all be able to sound out -at, -an, -it, and -in family words.  I would say that about 80% of my students are doing this fairly well, but there is still a small group of children that only sound out certain words well.  So I will be sending home a CVC mat that has about 30 words. You can practice at home with your child by playing games with them using counters and taking turns sounding out the words.


Sight Words: New sight words:  come, with, what, are, you


Phonics: Letter of the week was Z and we chanted the Zipper poem and buzzzzzz like bees for the z sound.  For next week, I will ask children to look for items or words with the digraph “CH” and to bring them in. I.e. –Cheese, chicken, checkers, cherry, chain and so forth.. 

We also played the “Rhyming Bag”, where a student picked out a card with a picture, named the word and gave a rhyming word.  If the student didn’t know a rhyming word, they were able to phone a friend for help.   

Math:  We measured ourselves by inches and cut out a piece of yarn to our exact height.  Students were able to place their measurement from shortest to tallest and we identified the average height in Room 101. Please take a look at our bulletin board outside in the hallway.  We have continued to practice Word Story problems and addition problems.  Next week, we will start counting money using penny, nickel and dime. Please work with naming the coins and having your child identify the value.  I will send home a hand-out with our coin poems so that the children can practice at home.

 Science:  Brrrr!! We are still learning about Penguins and completed a Penguin booklet with 5 facts that we learned.  We read Penguin Chick (Let’s-Read-and-Find-Out Science), by Betty Tatham and discussed the penguin life cycle. We also discussed how harsh weather makes survival difficult for penguins and even practice how penguins keep one penguin and egg warm by huddling in a circle. 


Homework Ideas: (Please send it in to share after it is complete, so we can celebrate your child’s hard work!)

*Practice your CVC mat and write at least 5 sentences and illustrate them.

* Write a book with our sight words and be ready to read it to our class.

* Practice identifying penny, nickel and dime and make some coin rubbings.

*Practice counting coins with nickels and pennies.

Just a few reminders:

1. Please have your child gather small items that have the digraph sound “CH” for next week.  Please send them in the small brown paper bag.

2. DIBELS and ACCESS testing will continue next week.

3. Nathan is the Student of the Week and will

share his poster with us on Tuesday.

4. There is no school on Monday, January 17th– Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday
