Room 101 News
Thursday, September 23, 2010

It’s time to cheer because Fall is here! We have kicked off the start of Fall by learning all about apples. We celebrated Johnny Appleseed’s birthday by learning about him and his travels in the United States.

Also, it was wonderful to see all the parents that attended our Curriculum Night! Here is what we covered this week in Room 101.

Reading: This week we focused on distinguishing between Fantasy (make-believe) and Reality during our literacy time. We read a big book, “Dinosaurs Go to School” and made a T-Chart that outline that focused on these two areas. We also read, “Johnny Appleseed” and discussed the elements of a Tall Tale.

The Letter we focused on was “M” and students bought in many items that we used during literacy time. We also took our first decodable book, “I Like M” to practice at home. Please have students store these books in one area. I will send a book on a weekly basis, so that they can add to their collection of readable books.
Sight words: I, am, like, the. – Please have children place their index cards in plastic pouch and practice with them. You may also add the number words, one through ten. We will practice them daily during Calendar time.

Writing: During our Writing Workshop, the students focused on including their sight words in their entry.

Social Studies: We focused on “Being Good Citizens” and discussed the importance of following rules and helping others. Children also drew pictures of what they want to be, when they grow up.

Math: This week we worked on identifying the different shapes, circle, square, triangle and rectangle. During our Math Workshop, we worked on sorting out coins and making comparisons. We also graphed our favorite apples after we had a tasting party. We also worked on, What weighs more than an apple? We used the balance scales and school items to further investigate.

Science: We are still working on our Apples and Trees Unit. During Science/ Cooking time, we all made our own apple tree out of different foods! We talked about the different parts of an apple and how they grow.
