 Reading: We read The Jolly Postman by Janet and Allan Ahlberg and explored/discussed characters from well-known stories.  We also examined different parts of a letter or postcard.  We also composed a letter to one of our favorite characters,The Cat in the Hat. Please send in an empty box (tissue box, cereael box) so that the students can make mail boxes for our Friendship/Letter writing theme.

 Writing: As part of our Winter/Seasons unit, I had the kids complete a writing project with the prompt ‘In the Winter, and they either wrote or dictated simple sentences.  Thank-you for submitting personal pictures of the children enjoying snow activities, they can be seen on our bulletin board in the hallway. We also wrote letters to our friends and letters to Haocheng, who is returning to Japan and will be missed dearly.

 Phonics: Sound of the week “CH” digraph and the children brought in all things that started with the ch sound.  We also ate different snacks with the “ch” sound, Cheddar Chex mix, Chocolate goldfish crackers, Cherries and chocolate chip cookies.   

Math:  In Everyday Math, we were introduced to the calculator and had some free time to explore.  The children were introduced to certain keys on the calculator and practice entering 2 digit numbers and addition/subtraction problems. 

 

 

 

 

We also made snowflakes with pattern block shapes on white paper.  Some students were able to make symmetrical snowflakes, which was a bit challenging.                                                                                     

 

 

 

 Social Studies:  We discussed important leaders from the past, Dr. Martin Luther King, George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We discussed qualities of what makes a good leader.  We watched “Our Friend Martin” and learned more about humanity and the civil rights movement.

SCHOOL TO HOME CONNECTION:
Homework Ideas: (Please send it in to share after it is complete, so we can celebrate your child’s hard work!)

*Make an order of daily events-fold a paper into thirds and use words: morning, afternoon, evening, first, second, third, next, last, before, after.

* Write a letter to Mrs. Piscitelli or to Room 101  about your weekend.

* Practice identifying penny, nickel and dime and make some coin rubbings.

Just a few reminders:

1. Please have your child gather small items that have the digraph sound “SH” for next week.  Please send them in the small brown paper bag.

2. DIBELS report will be sent home the week of 02/01.

3. Marisa is the Student of the Week and will share her poster with us on Monday.

4. Our next field trip is to the Field Museum on February 17th.  I will send out the permission slip with the information by next week.
