Hello Everyone!

I hope that everyone recovered from this blizzard and remained safe in their warm homes.  On Tuesday, our students in Room 101 were mesmerized by the snowy blizzard conditions.  As one student exclaimed, “It feels like we’re in a snow-globe!”  Everyone agreed! 🙂

 Reading: This week we focused on the big idea of “there is so much to see outside” and read the story, “What a Beautiful Sky”.  We practiced writing statements about what one sees in the sky. As our Kindergarten classroom begins implementing features of The Daily 5, I will try to capture them next week with photos.  Students are working on the following areas; Read to Self, Read to Someone,Listen to Reading, Working on Writing, Word Work.

Writing: Writing Friendly letters is in full swing in Room 101, as well as decorating our mailboxes.  Students continued to write their friends simple letters that includes the date, greeting, body, closing and our signature.  Students are encouraged to write a few sentences using our sight words

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Phonics: Sound of the week “gr” digraph and the children brought in all things that started with the gr sound. 

 Sight Words:  come, me, with, my, you, what, are , now

Math: We continued working on our number scrolls and a few more students reached up to 500!  Please continue to practice writing our numbers the correct way.

 

 

Science: We read about Groundhog Day in our Scholastic Readers and discussed Punxsutawney Phil the most famous groundhog and whether he would see his shadow or not.  Students each voted on whether he would see his shadow or not.  We also made groundhog puppets and sang a song about the groundhog. 

 FOSS Science: Fabrics…Students were introduced to a wide variety of fabrics in a systematic way, so that they become familiar with fabrics’ properties, discover what happens when they are tested, and discover how they interact with other materials, including water. We utilized microscopes to investigate the fibers that make up a particular fabric and we also made a fabric collage.

  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 SCHOOL TO HOME CONNECTION:
Homework Ideas: (Please send it in to share after it is complete, so we can celebrate your child’s hard work!)                      

* Practice writing your numbers from 1-100 and beyond.                                                                                                                       

 *Practice the Morning Show Announcement dialogue. Our class is responsible for this, the week of February 7th. 

* Start collecting 100 items for our 100th day celebration on February 23rd. Send in a ziploc bag with your child’s name.  Some ideas are buttons, m&m’s, cheerios, coins, skittles or marbles. Whatever your child can find and must be 100 of them!

Just a few reminders:

1. Report Cards and DIBELS reports will go out on Monday,  Feb. 7th. The report cards are for you to keep.

2. We will be celebrating Chinese New Year on Wednesday, so if you would like to send something in to share.  We would appreciate it!

3. Our field trip to the Field Museum is on February 17th and the permission slips will be sent out on Monday.

4. A class list will be sent home for our Valentine Day’s Party.

5. Our sound of the week is the “th” digraph, please collect items that start with the “th” sound and send them in.
