Room 101 News

Friday, February 11, 2011

Well, it just may be that Valentine’s Day is the most wonderful, most loving, most pure of all of the classroom celebrations that take place in Kindergarten!  The children are genuinely excited about giving their cards and gifts to each other, no matter how small, this upcoming Monday.  Also, they simply adore listening to the letters that their friends have written to them.

Reading: Our theme this week was “What is Science?   We read and discuss what Science is and made concept webs about Science with details. We practice “Word Work” centers, which had students making short I and short u words.  We also read an informational book about Benjamin Franklin, the inventor and discussed how inventions have changed our lives.

The Sound of the Week was “th” digraph and students learned two new songs, “The Thump and Thud Dinosaur Stomp” and “The Tooth Fairy”. A Valentine heart worksheet, with certain sight words such as “they,” “that,” “this,” and “with” became visible with a crayon resist wash and was a big hit!

Writing:  During our Writing Workshop, the students are focusing on writing sentences with proper nouns.  We wrote postcards to our parents to tell them what we are learning in Room 101.

Math: In Everyday Math, we practiced counting to 100’s, by counting by 2’s, 5’s & 10’s.  We learned about even and odd numbers and worked on finding pairs for all the even numbers. Please continue to work on this at home and on writing our numbers correctly.

 Chinese New Year Celebration!

Social Studies:: There was quite a bit of excitement learning about the Chinese New Year! We learned about different customs that families follow and about their special foods. We discussed about China’s population, well known landmarks and counted 1-10 in Chinese.

Homework Ideas: (Please send it in to share after it is complete, so we can celebrate your child’s hard work!)

*Practice writing your numbers by counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.

* Practice your sight words- how, is, with, this, that, they–by chanting them—they , they, t-h-e-y!   Play Pass the Word, where you take turns saying a sentence aloud with a sight word.

*Investigate all the inventions that China has contributed to our everyday life. Make a list of them and be ready to share with our class.
