What an exciting and fun-filled week! We celebrated Valentine’s day and had a field trip to the Field Museum. Many thanks to Mr. Pious, Mrs. Yoo, Mrs. Ye, Mrs. Lockaby and Mrs. Machuca for chaperoning our trip

Reading: Bugs, bugs, bugs everywhere! We read the big book “I love Bugs” about a boy who collected bugs and focused on drawing conclusions.  We also learned about Spider Facts and made paper spiders with eyes, fangs and bouncy legs.  We sang the “Itsy Bitsy Spider” song and acted out the story, Anansi and the Grasshopper.

The Sound of the Week was “sn” sound and the children shared their items from home.

Math: We have incorporated an Afternoon Meeting/Message during our calendar time.” We spend the time figuring out what today, tomorrow, and yesterday is on the calendar and we identify the numbers. We also play mystery number, where I take a number off the calendar and the children have to figure out what the missing number. At the end we sing the days of the week and the months of the year songs.

We also used eye droppers to see how many drops of water can be put on a penny. Some students reached over 35 drops of water on top of  the penny!

Social Studies: We started learning a little about Presidents this week. First up, we learned about George Washington. We read the perfect little biography that kept the kids really engaged.  They were fascinated by the fact that George Washington didn’t go to school! We created a circle map and gathered tons of facts about our first President and then carried over our new learning into a little writing piece.

Homework Ideas: (Please send it in to share after it is complete, so we can celebrate your child’s hard work!)

* Make a story web about what you did this weekend. Ask your child to draw their reading response web.

 * Practice your sight words- how, is, with, this, that, they–by chanting them—they , they, t-h-e-y!   Play Pass the Word, where you take turns saying a sentence aloud with a sight word.
