Welcome to an exciting year at Ray!  I hope everyone had a wonderful and relaxing summer.  My name is Maria Piscitelli and I will be your child’s Kindergarten teacher at Ray this year.  I have been with the Chicago Public Schools since 1994.  I have taught grades two, sixth through eighth in Social Studies/ Language Arts, ESL K-8th and I have six years experience in the State Pre-K program.  I am looking forward to the upcoming school year and can’t wait to get to know all of my new students and families!

Reading: This week we read “Chicka, Chicka Boom, Boom” and discussed and identified all the letters of the alphabet. We also sang the song and played Swat the Letter as a whole group. Students were able then to make their own Chicka, Chicka Tree and write all the letters that they knew. This served the purpose of an assessment to gather some information about the students’ knowledge of letter identification. We also read, “The Kissing Hand” and discuss our feelings of being separated from our loved ones on our first week of Kindergarten. The students were able to make handprints with paints and drew pictures of their families. Some students were even able to write a few words about their family. Developmental Writing is being encouraged as students are either stringing letters or beginning sounds are emergent in their writing.

Writing: This week we practiced writing our names on lined paper and used our slates with chalk. The Handwriting Program that we are using in Kindergarten is “Handwriting Without Tears”. I am requesting that each child brings in one clean sock that they may use during our slate time.

Math: This week we focused on our Everyday Math Calendar routine. The students reviewed the days of the week, started our number line, recorded data with our weather observational chart and made a bar graph as well.

Science: This week we started our Science theme of Apples and Trees. We learned key vocabulary, such as Apples, Blossoms, Core
and Stems. We also completed an apple Fruit diagram with all the parts labeled.

Social Studies: We discussed “Families” and the members of our own families. Children were able to write the number of people in their family and label their family members with the words, mom, dad, brother and sister.
