It has been such a busy time in Room 101 and it is wonderful to see all the progress that we have made since September. We celebrated Dr. Seuss’ birthday with some many fun activities that were tied to our favorite books.

Reading: In our Journey series, we read stories about the deep blue sea, which was a wonderful connection to our field trip to the Shedd Aquarium. We focused on analyzing and evaluating informational text to determine the Author’s Purpose.  We sang Dolphin, Dolphin,, Ten Little Fishes and A Sailor Went to Sea, Sea, Sea.

During our guided reading groups, our focus has been to begin to read with expression, fluency and accuracy. Please continue to practice reading at home with your child. Help your child to read in phrases using some expression. A great way to do this is to take turns reading pages. Above all, make reading fun!

Sight Words: is, how, find, this, will, be, there, for.Read Across America/PJ Day

Writing: In our Reading Response Journals, we continued to focus on writing a specific subject, ie. Dolphins and then writing 4 facts/details that pertain to the subject in complete sentences. Also, room 101 is bursting with avid authors writing and publishing books with a focus on personal narratives, fairy tales and even poetry!  I am so proud of their creativity, dedication and watching them become more and more confident in their writing ability. I will be sending an “All about Me”, Author page that I am asking parents to help fill out.  Please return them by next week.

Math: Counting money-Penny, Nickel, Dime and Quarters. We sang songs to identify the coins and their value and have started to count different coins.
