Reading: This week we focused on trying to identify important parts of a story in order to comprehend it and be able to retell it to others. Students had to listen to a story and then be able to name the Characters and Settings. The children did a wonderful job with this Comprehension skill and were even able to incorporate them in their Reading Response Journals.

The Letter of the Week was T and students learned two new songs, “The T Food Song “and “The Train Song.” Also we really enjoy singing “Who Let the Letters Out?”, which focuses on letter identification and sounds.

We also continued to add Literacy Learning Stations to our center time. Our favorites are the Letter/Phonic wheels, Reading the Room with special wands/pointers and our Sound bags.

Writing: During our Writing Workshop, the students received their yellow “Writer’s Folders”. These folders will contain their finished writing pieces, a craft stick with their name to separate our words that we write and extra writing paper.

Math: During our math workshop, we graphed our shapes at the center, What’s in My Bag? We also continued practicing writing our numbers 1-10. Please continue to work with your child on this at home.

Science/Social Studies: Since this week is Fire Prevention Week, the students learned about Fire Safety, Firefighters and what to do during a Fire Drill.

SCHOOL TO HOME CONNECTION:
Homework Ideas: (Please send it in to share after it is complete, so we can celebrate your child’s hard work!)

*Practice writing your numbers 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.

*Read a story and help your children identify the characters and setting.

Just a few reminders:

3. There will be no school on Monday, October 11th for the Columbus Holiday.

4. On Friday, October 15th, there will be a substitute in Room 101. I will be attending a training in the DIBELS assessment for Kindergarten for CPS.
